Gombe is the capital of Gombe State, created in 1996 from part of Bauchi State. The state calls itself the "Jewel in the Savannah", and the city is the seat of the Emir of Gombe.

Gombe is a calm, growing city with a federal university and teaching hospital. The state is home to Fulani, Hausa, Tangale, Waja, Tera and many other peoples, and its southern hills are among the most scenic landscapes in the north-east.
