Bauchi is the capital of Bauchi State in north-eastern Nigeria, set on a plain dotted with rocky hills. It is the seat of the Emir of Bauchi, whose emirate was founded in the early nineteenth century.

The state is home to dozens of ethnic groups as well as Hausa and Fulani communities. For visitors, Bauchi is best known as the gateway to Yankari National Park, one of Nigeria's most popular wildlife destinations.

The Eid durbar is the city's biggest public celebration. Bauchi State's many ethnic groups also hold harvest and cultural festivals, and Christmas is celebrated by Christian communities.

Best time to visit

November to February is dry and cooler, and the best time for wildlife viewing at Yankari, as animals gather near water. March to May is very hot. The rainy season runs from about May to September.

Taxis, tricycles and motorcycle taxis cover the city. Bauchi has an airport. Yankari is best reached by car, about two hours away. Check local advice before travelling.
