Azare is the second-largest town in Bauchi State, in the north of the state on the main road between Kano and Maiduguri. It is the seat of the Emir of Katagum.
The Katagum emirate was founded in the early nineteenth century as part of the Sokoto Caliphate. Today Azare is a commercial centre for the farming and herding communities of northern Bauchi.
