Lafia is the capital of Nasarawa State, which was created in 1996 from part of Plateau State. The city lies in the savannah of north-central Nigeria and is the seat of the Emir of Lafia.
Nasarawa is home to many ethnic groups, including the Eggon, Alago, Tiv, Gwandara and Hausa. Its countryside includes rocky highlands, rivers and farmland producing yams, sesame, rice and other crops.
