Ilorin is the capital of Kwara State, on the boundary between south-western and northern Nigeria. Its culture blends Yoruba language and customs with a strong Islamic tradition, and it is the seat of the Emir of Ilorin.

Kwara calls itself the "State of Harmony". Ilorin is a calm, spread-out city with a historic old town, a traditional pottery industry, and easy access to some of the most impressive natural and cultural sites in the region.

  1. Watch the Eid durbar

    During the Eid celebrations, Ilorin holds a durbar in which horsemen in colourful robes and decorated saddles ride in procession to pay homage to the Emir, with drumming, trumpets and large crowds.

  2. Visit the Emir's palace and Central Mosque

    The Emir's palace and the large Ilorin Central Mosque, with its golden domes, stand at the heart of the old city and are its best-known landmarks.

  3. See traditional pottery

    In the Okelele area, women potters have made clay pots by hand for generations, shaping and firing them in the open. Ilorin pottery is sold across the region.

  4. Climb Sobi Hill

    Sobi Hill, on the northern edge of the city, is a large rocky hill with panoramic views over Ilorin, especially at sunrise and sunset.

  5. Day trip to Owu Falls

    Owu Falls, in Ifelodun area of Kwara State, is one of the highest waterfalls in West Africa, dropping about 120 metres down a rock face into a pool. It is about two hours from Ilorin and is most impressive in the rainy season.

  6. See the Esie soapstone figures

    The museum at Esie, about an hour from Ilorin, holds hundreds of carved soapstone figures of unknown origin. Founded in 1945, it is regarded as the first museum established in Nigeria.

Festivals and culture

The Eid durbars, after Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, are Ilorin's biggest public celebrations. The city also hosts cultural festivals, Christmas celebrations and concerts and parties during the festive season.

Food to try

Try amala with ewedu and gbegiri, tuwo with miyan kuka, ofada rice, suya, kilishi and fura da nono. Local snacks include kuli-kuli (groundnut cakes) and roasted corn.

Best time to visit

November to March is dry, with harmattan haze in December and January. Owu Falls is at its best in the rainy season, from about June to October. Plan around Eid for the durbar.

Getting around

Taxis, tricycles and ride-hailing apps cover the city. Ilorin has an international airport and is about four to five hours from Lagos by road. Owu Falls and Esie are best reached by hired car.
