Daura is an ancient town in the north of Katsina State, near the border with Niger Republic. In Hausa tradition it is regarded as the oldest of the Hausa city-states and the spiritual home of the Hausa people.

According to legend, a prince from the east arrived in Daura and killed a serpent that guarded the town's well, then married the queen of Daura. Their descendants are said to have founded the original seven Hausa states.
