Birnin Kebbi is the capital of Kebbi State, created in 1991, in the far north-west of Nigeria. The city sits in the valley of the Sokoto-Rima river system and is the seat of the Emir of Gwandu.
The Gwandu emirate was the western half of the Sokoto Caliphate in the nineteenth century. Today Kebbi State is one of Nigeria's leading rice producers, and its river floodplains are farmed intensively during both the wet and dry seasons.
