Nsukka is a university town on the hills of northern Enugu State, about an hour north of Enugu city. Its university, founded in 1960, was the first indigenous university in Nigeria and gives the town much of its character.

The surrounding Nsukka area is rich in history. Archaeologists have found some of the earliest evidence of iron smelting in West Africa here, and the region keeps strong masquerade and farming traditions.
